My question concerns new articles posted on the front page of your site.

Why is it that you post "Read the full story here" links which don't go to the full story, just the same new item in the forums?  I think it would make more sense to have the link that says, "Read the full story here" actually go to a place with the full story.

Maybe it's a limitation of the scripts being used I don't know, but it seems like a waste of time to look at the front page and then look at the identical content in the forums.

I would recommend (if possible) to have your front page news items say, "Read the full story here" <--- External link to the source (Some posts do this)

and

"Discuss the story on the forums here" <--- Internal link to the forums.

Otherwise, I see no need to visit the home page

I was also wondering why the home page news announcements mirror the entire forum post.  I mean, whey do I need to "Read the full article here" when the full article is already posted on the front page?

I was thinking the same thing earlier today...

I think each news poster should be responsible for providing the source, but maybe we should change the other tag to  "Discuss this article in the forums."

there is a charcter limit on the articles, right it's set to 200. the "Read the full article here" link is there on every article posted to point to the thread in which the article was posted. all news articles, for now, are drawn from the forums.

i changed the link text to better reflect it's purpose for now.

side note: the character limit is set at 200 because we are having issues with the quotes being cut off and not rendered properly. ie "
Quote
blah text here..." in stead of it rendering the quote box regardles of where the text is cut off. we are also having css issues with ie and the quote box which is being investigated also.

i think the limit should be removed, i say this for only one reason.

the poster of news in the forums should edit his post to reflect what is posted on the front page.  i.e. tell the users to post only info they want shown on the front page, and remember to keep it short and simple, and any more information needed to be in the NEXT post of that thread.  LIKE its set up in various other portals.

then each post should append on the front page a discuss here link... any links to sources should be either in the first post or the secound post.

mabe the message to append to every post should be, read more and discuss here.

seeing that every admin that wants to add the news to the front page has to verify the news and move it, this method should be fine.  you have a page about how to make news posts ie use dictionary, thusorus etc.  just add this info in it too.  mabe have a link to a character counter and suggest most front page posts (ie the first post) to have 200 characters or less, if need be, because of a quote etc, it may be longer.  then the user is warrned, and then you could say this is to long for the first post, it can not be submitted, please read the rules.

I recommend taking a look at CuteNews.  Nice php script that works with flat files.  Easy to integrate.
