Networks To Air Live Concert For Katrina Relief

September 1, 2005 10:03 a.m. EST

Christina Ficara - All Headline News Staff Reporter

New York, NY (AHN) - Three music television networks and several famous artists are teaming up for a Hurricane Katrina relief concert to air live on September 10.

Usher, Green Day, Ludacris, Alicia Keys, Dave Matthews Band, Rob Thomas, Linkin Park's Chester Bennington, David Banner, Gretchen Wilson, and John Mellencamp are all scheduled to take part in the live concerts staged in New York, Los Angeles, and Nashville.

The concerts will air on MTV, VH1, and CMT. Additional artists are expected to sign-on, with proceeds from the shows going to the American Red Cross.

Judy McGrath, chair and CEO of MTV Networks, says of the concerts, "In the face of a tragedy of this scope, we simply have to do everything in our power to offer support, comfort, and hope to all the people directly impacted by the hurricane. Our goal is to join forces on every medium to get involved, to volunteer, to contribute in any way we can."

The concerts are just a small part of a larger awareness campaign that includes an MTV News special on Katrina relief efforts, on-campus resources, and information across all the network's channels on aid and activism.

Viacom, MTV's parent company, has reportedly contributed $1 million to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Effort.

IMHO...this is a great test for HS after a lot of things have been promised/said and a pretty sizable chunk of change has been dumped into the whole effort.

That being said, I'd agree Mono, so far, it's been a pretty poor showing on immediate response time after disaster.  Agreed, it's a pretty wild set of circumstances to deal with but this would pretty much be in line with a forseeable worst case scenario.  It's a fairly well known fear that if an above Cat 3 hurricane ever hit New Orleans and surrounding area, the end result would be as devastating (or more) than what we see played out in front of us.

Guess wait and see how the middle to long term releif effort plans pan out  :hmm: ?

On the relief offers and possible rejections.  I dunno.  Hard to judge really from our perspective.  I'm guessing that the security issues and the length of time it's taking to mobilize the military might be part of the problems.  But again, I'd only be guessing.

Poor folks man   .

I don't care if America doesn't accept the help, even though Americans do take care of our own....I was just wondering where the condolence calls were...the offers of help....but I am glad there are people setting up concerts and etc...and the Yankees (yeah the evil empire   ) is giving 1 mil as are the Houston Texans and the ATL Falcons are giving no less then a 1/4 of a mill....even though it will prob be more because of a guy by the name of Warrick Dunn. That dude is a class act.

But countries have asked to help, but we take care of our own, so I am just gonna shut up about it...its out of my hands.

More like, took a pretty ignorant, arrogant and just plain old stupid post and turned it into a meaningful and relevant discussion.

It's ignorant to think that no nation would offer the U.S., at the very least,  sympathies on a disaster like this.

It's ignorant to think that those who have the means would not help their fellow Americans in such dire circumstance.

It's arrogant to think that no nation would offer to help.

Therefore, the initial topic of this thread is just downright pretty ****ing stupid (pardon my french) so why not turn some flame bait into something worth discussing.

Wanna see this thread go off on another wild tangent  Cheesy ?

Something else that has come out of this disaster is the nature of our modern media.

Non-stop fractured tragedy piece after fractured tragedy pieced followed up by a grim reminder...cut to the piece about litter of puppies being rescued...or something else similiarly light and bubbly.

I had an email today

Quote

Federal offices said today that people wanting to help to not attend the impacted sites by Hurricane Katrina and instead make cash contributions to organizations.

Cash donations do allow the agencies to avoid the need to store, pack, and distribute donated goods. The cost to do so becomes prohibitive which is why cash donations are currently being sought.

FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency www.fema.gov) listed the following agencies as needing cash to assist hurricane victims:

- American Red Cross, 800-HELP NOW (435-7669) English, 800-257-7575 Spanish.

- Operation Blessing, 800-436-6348.

- America's Second Harvest, 800-344-8070.

- Adventist Community Services, 800-381-7171.

- Catholic Charities, USA, 703-549-1390.

- Christian Disaster Response, 941-956-5183 or 941-551-9554.

- Christian Reformed World Relief Committee, 800-848-5818.

- Church World Service, 800-297-1516.

- Convoy of Hope, 417-823-8998.

- Lutheran Disaster Response, 800-638-3522.

- Mennonite Disaster Service, 717-859-2210.

- Nazarene Disaster Response, 888-256-5886.

- Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, 800-872-3283.

- Salvation Army, 800-SAL-ARMY (725-2769).

- Southern Baptist Convention - Disaster Relief, 800-462-8657, ext. 6440.

- United Methodist Committee on Relief. 800-554-8583.

Also heard that P.Diddy and Jay Z  have both donated $1,000,000 from thier own pockets.....impressive !
