While your topic is a little hi on hyperbole Mono, the same is echoed in the letter.

It (the letter) has some interesting themes and it is just plain old interesting.

I guess I'm left wondering why is it the president of little old Iran is the one opening up dialouge and not the other president who is the supposed leader of the free world?

IMHO, a school of thought that has come to light fairly recently that has been seemingly completely ignored by this administration...clear and very public two way dialouge has been pretty much non-existant.  You loose absolutely nothing by communicating with your enemy and you stand to gain everything.

Would you really want to be sitting opposite Dick Cheney in top level negotiations?  The guy made mince meat out of his political opponents in two straight elections on national tv, why not turn him loose on some third world despot?

er..... ok.....
I was thinking of a response..... I pondered for ages and ages and this is the best I could come up with....

Dear Dr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

We would appreciate it if you read your own words, and ceased supporting terrorist regimes across the middle east, if not the world. If, in the process of doing this, you where to die of a colonic embolism due to ceasing to blow rhetoric out of your ass, then maybe you might be one of the first great peacemakers of the 21st century.

Until you come down off your high horse and speak to world in a adult and responsible manor I'm afraid the only response you will get will echo of the Americans trapped in Bastogne whilst fighting the great and noble war of WW2. "Nuts".

Hope you have a nice day,
Hugs and Kisses,
Fishy.

P.S. The Holocaust did happen.
P.P.S. The Turks where good for the middle east during the late 19, early 20th century.

Maybe because you don't offer that respect to this type of thought process......

Intersting comparison I heard the other day, for nearly half a century, the U.S. and the former U.S.S.R. played a bitter game of global domination with the threat to blow up the entire world.  Yet these two sides ended up talking regularly.  What's the hold up now?

Interesting point, to a degree.

I'd say it could be easily argued that there are quite a few differences between Iran and the former USSR; causing how we deal with them to also be different.

Just tossing out quick thoughts, for one, I'm sure we saw the soviets as more 'on our level', both culturally and militarily. I would say that got them a bit more respect in how we dealt with them.

Iran is driven by radical religious fanatacism more than anything else, reminiscent of middle age crusades. I would say that puts them 'not on our level'.

They also are not quite the same threat to us at this time as the Soviets were, thereby giving us more time to 'diss' them, for lack of a better term.

They also held American hostages for over a year.

They are clearly connected to a lot of terrorism around the globe, one way or another.

While the US and USSR had tense, mutual competition; I don't believe the Soviets were ever threatening the decimation of one of our allies, just because. (the iran/isreal issue).

I'm just babbling out ideas, but in short terms, my guess is we saw the Soviets as dangerous equals, and it was clearly in our interests to treat them as such. I believe Iran is more like ignorant barbarians at the gate. You don't negotiate with them as equals.

Here's something real interesting. I knew not all of Iran was behind Ahmadinejad, but this is pretty major.....
