Could have been killed today along with my buddy. I hate my mother****ing job.

Loading a truck full of windows. Me and my loading partner go to weigh a window, it seemed pretty heavy (64"x120") came out to 270 pounds. We have 40 of these we need to load. We start a stack of these in the truck without proper bracing on the windows to keep the square with each other (didnt have the blocks) and I'm holding the stack. Maybe 5 windows deep and another one comes, the stack starts to fall. My loading partner catches it, tells me to help the swing shift guy bring the windows in.

9 windows deep, go get the forklift to take the empty cart off the truck. The moment I hop on I look over to the dock and see the swing shift guy run into the truck *CRASH* Jump off the forklift hit the ground running. In the truck is my partner pinned against the wall with 2430 lbs worth of windows crushing him. Me and the guy are trying to lift it with no luck, another comes in, sees the clusterfuck, helps, no luck. By this time im yelling "GET THE FUCK IN HERE! NOW!" This guy was starting to turn blue. Took 10 of us to get the windows off him. Then we all had to hold the stack while taking it down.

He, suprisingly only suffered a bruised shoulder and a cut. Said his back was hurting some too.

Anyhow, everybody said that if I had been holding the stack when that happened, it would have killed me.

Fuckin aye.

Yea', you could work at an airport doing air freight, then you would REALLY be screwed if something fell on you.

When I started working in the shop I am at now, I always asked myself, "What if the hydraulic line on this hoist busts and this car comes crashing down on me?". Now, I try not to think about it. There's really nothing I can do if it happens one day, so why worry about it?

Glad to here your buddy wasn't seriously hurt, or worse.

P.S.

Work sucks.

You know working on a Delivery Truck(my usual job) or what I'm doing right now @ Best Buy (working overnights since its close to thanksgiving and they needed my help with it) I always wonder like you Fixxx, what happens if something happens, Like the lift on the truck comes crashing down, or a 400 lb refrigerator sliding off and falling right on top of me, or some asshole cutting me off as I'm driving a 25,000 lb truck with a full load @ 65 miles an hr on the interstate and then deciding hey I'm gonna slam on my breaks, or if I'm going to slip and fall 60-80 feet while I'm putting up merchandise during the overnight, but after doing this for the past two years...I don't think about it. If you do, that's all you're gonna think about. I saw a guy fall 80 feet straight to the floor...after smacking his head against the pier in which we hold the TVs, Fridges, Ranges and Washers and Dryers, and live, but he was lucky cause if he had fallen straight down he was dead...even the paramedics thought he would die. You can't think about bad things happening.

I am glad you're buddy wasn't seriously hurt. Nothing worse then getting hurt @ work. cause then you have to go through all kinds of legal bullshit.

Shit happens.

P.S

Fixxx Ditto...Work sucks balls.

Don't feel too nervous under the lift, there's (supposed to be) a safety device in there right at the cylinder which will cut off the flow if the line ever does pop (Velocity fuse) And the lift at a Garage I worked at years back even had lock-arms which would swing out and lock into the lift guide rails in the event of a sudden increase in downward momentum.

It's always been my experience that the most unsafe equipment in any work environment tends to be my co-workers.    grin

All this talk of hating work must have seeded into my brain, I quit my job at the airport last week  Thumbs up The upside to a weak dollar is we're doing allot more production for exporting now, great news for those of us in the maintenance field, I'd been getting an endless string of calls and emails ever since I updated my resume last month. Might be working for the Willy Wonka candy company, then all I'll have to worry about are the Oompa Loompa's ganging up on me.   cheesy

So yea, if you're a Mechanic and you've been working in the same $#!thole for a number of years now and you're sick of it, NOW is a good time to update your resume.

This is true.

However, when bringing a car down on the hoist, you have to hold down the safety lock arm so it can move down, and sometimes those locks like to play games on you and before you know it, the car is tilting towards you because one side is going down while the other side is locked.

When you're standing right beside the car, it's pretty hard to tell that only half of the hoist is moving until it's nearly too late.
