what I have noticed is the member numbers are one off the forums stats say, I don't know how far back this goes though, its probly from a test by the Mods / admins.

at JoBlo.com (my movie forums), when you register you have to give a 300 character mini essay about why you think you are a good candidate for the forum.
if your reason is not approved, you are not granted with a confirmation e-mail.
it really helps boot out the 1 time members and spammers
