Not bad. Sounds like some of the Old Metallica sneaking in. Old as in Black album, not the really good stuff.

I own every Metallica album except St. Anger. I thought it was so f'ing bad I stayed away from it. I'll be curious to see how this goes with the old producer on there.

I think it sounds better than St. Anger. Hetfield needs to change his vocals back to the pre-St. Anger days.

Whowha?

As for the songs. They have their ups and downs.

The ups -

- The first song is heavy as hell. Metallica isn't Metallica unless they're heavy, the first song delivers.
- Solos are back. Enough said.
- Laris (seems to have) turned his snare back "on". The tin can sound was atrocious.

The downs -

- The second song (mostly) screams of punk. Nothing against punk, but Metallica is not, or should not, fall into that category.
- James Hetfield needs to either
A) Start drinking again
or
B) stfu

His use of "Whoa yeah! Whoa oh whoa!" screams of 'I've run out of ideas as to what to sing about and/or the creative centers of my brain require alcohol.'

His "Dr. Seuss lyrics" are terrible at best, and he needs to learn from songs like "Invisible Kid" that lyrics put in a song just to rhyme with one an other is meant for hip hop, and the biggest metal band of all time should not sink to such a sad level.

I'm not sure where I stand. The music delivers (mostly), but bad lyrics can overshadow everything.

I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

contrary to what fix just said, I think its a hell of alot better then st anger, definitely buying it and prolly gonna love it, james a quit his ban on the true metal style and kirks rifs sound great. I dont always care about lyrics, its all about the guitar for me.

St Anger is teh sux.

The lyrics I'm not too sure about, but like I said, the vocal style is sub-par.

The actual instrumentation is top-notch though.

"This stuff is certainly a lot more dynamic and a lot more varied than the last couple of go-rounds," he said. "There's a lot of light and shade in these songs. There's heavy, fast, nutty stuff, and then there's some slowdowns and musical interludes. It's pretty different from 'St. Anger', and it's pretty different from the 'Load' stuff. This stuff is not the one-dimensional punch in the face that 'St. Anger' was. This is probably a little more like those couple of albums back there in the decade that begins with an '8.'"

"It's been no secret that Rick [Rubin, producer] suggested to us that we use a couple of those records as reference points — that we spend some time kind of accessing that headspace. So when we would come to forks in the road, sometimes the exercise became, 'What would we have done at this point in 1985?'""
