I've been playing guitar for 35 years.  But I gave it up this year.  I still have a guitar but I don't play anymore.

I feel fairly certain, that you know this to be true...

You've said that before.

Meaning;   I think anyone that plays an instrument, I mean really plays an instrument,  takes a break every so often. But they always pick it up again.

Because once you truly learn an instrument, it becomes a part of you.

There are times I may have 'quit' for 3 years at a time. But I always come back to it.

Absolutely.  My life became a mess after "giving it up".  It does become a part of you.  The spark of that invisible, yet very real part of yourself, that never becomes visible, at any other time.

If it was a big part of who you are, I hope you pick it up again soon...at least for short moments of your time.  I don't think I will be "quitting" again.

I wish that were true in my case Mono.  But I have physical reasons for it (I'm diabetic, remember).  If I can get past the
DPN without losing the feeling in my hands I may be able to play again.  But for now and the foreseeable future, it just
hurts too much.  I've sold nearly all my gear except for my Les Paul Custom and a Fender Blues Jr amp.  I'm hoping that
I'll be able to play again.  But my doctor says that it isn't likely.

My wife (bless her) bought me a beautiful Gibson ES-137 Classic (antique burst) that has a terrific tone as an incentive to get me to
keep playing.  But I can't play more than a couple of minutes because of the pain.  I miss it more than I can tell you.

I still find myself playing my guitar in my head when I listen to some music.  I guess that will never go away.  I hope not, anyway.
