As I sit and think of how far I have to go to become a decent guitarist, I wonder.... how long have you guys been playing?

Me?  Only a few months with my nothing special Squier Strat :/

Been playing maybe 4 years. Not horrible but still not terribly good, getting better every day though. Working with a new band... Gut Truck Assassin... after I get my truck here in the next couple of weeks I'm going to buy decent head and a cheap Marshall cab, replace the speakers in it with celestion speakers in time.

Yep, the ball is rolling.

Also got 6 functioning guitars, 2 non-functioning.

The functioning guitars include: a Carlson PG-70, a Custom Made Ibanez from July '82, a new (crappy) Dean Vendetta, a Yamaha acoustic, a Fender acoustic, a Yamaha classical of sorts.

As for the non-functioning ones, I own a Fender Squier Telecaster - in pieces since March '06, and an anonymous classical with a broken bridge. I plan on replacing the bridge and turning it into a fretless guitar.

My limited gear includes a Behringer practice amp, a Dunlop Crybaby 535Q Multi-Wah Pedal, BOSS Metalzone, Boss Distortion (not in use), Dunlop original crybaby (not in use), DOD FX55 Supra Distortion Pedal (not in use), a Yamaha cassette recorder, a glass slide, tuner and metronome (Korg), Visual Sound one spot adapter, cables, picks, extra strings, batteries, assorted spare guitar parts, etc.

Next planned guitar purchases are, along with that stated in the previous post, a Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster, BOSS pedal tuner, Ibanez Flanger, MXR Phase 90, BOSS Equalizer pedal, a digital recorder, among other things.

Not that any of you asked about all that Tongue

Got to start somewhere. Just sit on the edge of your bed with your guitar on your lap and your amp on the floor and practice. Practice every day.

If you have any questions about guitar, music or any related things, email me at lameguitarist@gmail.com. I'll help you out.

I'm glad you are playing.  Sounds like you've got a nice little practice setup.  cool.

I have a strat-copy with the wammy bar or whatever its called, and for a cheap Japanese  copy, its ok (has'nt warped into oblivion yet.)

But usually I play my T. Haruo 12-string.  Been playing for many years, in and out of "bands" and clups, etc.  At this stage of the game, I simply enjoy writing my own little original tunes.

Keep going and spring for lessons, so you can play Flamenco...someone's gotta do it.Cheesy

Practice your scales too. Learn them in C major/A minor. Learn the diatonic of each scale and then learn the pentatonic of each scale.

Amen.

To add on... when you learn to play something or you write something original, never, EVER have this thought come into your mind, "That's good enough." Keep trying to make it even better.

i love guitar, but i cant really play. i have always had a guitar, and my dad had one previously, he played in a band etc.

i never really wanted to learn, and when i did learn some, i thought to myself, its a pain in the ass to actually ocastrate music - to make music and make it sound good, not to mention you have to do it with other instraments.  i just got fed up and said bah - this will never work for me.

if i were to be the kind of person that plays other peoples music - i dont think i would be happy at all - cause i hate all those bands which do that.

Well lets not discourage the lad now. Some people just don't dig making the music, just listening to it. The best way to learn starting off that I know of is to learn tunes by other people. After you have a repertoire of say 5 or 7 tunes, learn a little bit of theory and/or write a couple riffs.

And remember, there's no shame in taking lessons.

i know some people that made stuff with their guitar and "Acid"
and i have made some music with "trackers" and samples....

that stuff is fun, and most of all, you dont need a band, but if you wanted to play live, you just hire someone to folow the music that you made.

I dunno about all that. I usually just go to jam with the band with nothing prepared and end up coming out with an almost whole tune two to six hours later.
