Well, in which tenure do you think Eric Clapton did his best work?

NOTE: If you do not know who Eric Clapton is, go shoot yourself in the face.

Id say unplugged, alas there there is no option and I dont know whether it comes under "solo" or "other"

We'll call that a solo project for now.

I'm not a big enough fan of Clapton to have any kind of valid opinion, but I much prefer his solo stuff.

His solo stuff, especially from the past six or seven years.  Clapton just keeps getting better and better.  He's proven that music can be simple, yet elegant and moving.

I remember being 14 or so, and spray painting "John Bonham Lives" on a wall in New York.

That one didn't mean squat either.  'Cause he was quite dead.

Clapton's good. But 'God' is a bit over doing it.

True. That douchbag who did that probably missed an 'o' somewhere in there.

LOL

A 'good' guitarist is largely dependent on what style you like.

From the open tuning fingerstyle of Michael Hedges, to the fret shredding speed licks of Malmsteen, to the lap tapping of Mongrain, who's a guitar 'god' all depends on what you like. Most guitarists who are really really great at a style, are only good at that style.

Well I think the only thing Clapton hasn't done is play metal. I like metal, but if he did it, that would be selling out in a way... maybe. I'd still give it a listen.

But you're right, its all perspective. We can all agree on one thing though. Kurt Cobain isn't a guitar god in any way (just because you're a popular musician doesn't mean you are actually good)

Not to say that he sucks shit through a straw at guitar, he just wasn't as good as he was hyped up to be.

According to a friend of my brother, Cobain was a better guitarist than Slash.

Perhaps (and I can only hope) his choice of words was poor. Maybe he wanted to say that he liked Cobain's style more, but if you think he's better than Slash you're either on some serious medication, or you need to be put on some.

Funny timing on that comment....

I just spent the last two days listening to Use Your Illusions 1 and 2, and the two Live Era discs on my MP3 player.

I used to think that Slash was just  a typical rock metal guitarist compared to somebody a little more polished like a Van Halen.

But when you really pay attention, Slash's ability to throw melodic phrasing into a hard rock solo is really impressive. He's a much more talented technical guitarist than the heroin addict hard rock partyer image would imply.

You should get his 'Slash's Snakepit' solo albums as well as his new band 'Velvet Revolver' CD.

I have Contraband (Velvet Revolver).

I had Snakepit stuff too, years ago when it first came out; but it's been so long I can't remember that stuff. *heads to Napster*

I may have asked this before, but MONO, I believe a while back (possible on the old forums) you showed me some classical acoustic stuff, you said (to try to quote) "He was the Van Halen of his time." I think it was stuff from the 1800's too (the sheet music of course)

Does that ring a bell?

Yep.

The guy's name was Carcassi.  Search the forums here for Carcassi, 'cause I gave you a bunch of links too.

Just remember, we're talking 1800's. So, it won't seem like much by today's standards. But anyone with any liking of old classical guitar music knows and likes Carcassi.
