I spilled some water onto my PC.. a miniscule amount found its way through the top exhaust fan and dripped onto the CPU and I quickly forced shut-down when I saw the system begin to crash. I let the PC dry for over a day.. then had to mess around with BIOS for the PC to recognize the correct hardrive hosting the OS. Now the only thing missing is that my ROM drives are no longer found. I tried adding new hardware, but no go. Does anyone know what I can do? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Test the hardware in a different PC to ensure no damage was done to the devices when the incident occurred. Check cables as well. As a last resort, try booting the machine up with each drive in succession as a slave to master IDE channel. You may have fried your second IDE channel, which would require an add-in card to replace. After you've tried these options, report back here.

Thanks Lazer, I'll definitely get on that next weekend.. I'm taking my girlfriend out for a day in Newport RI, and a concert later that evening. Then I'm hiking the Whites this weekend, but I'll make sure to let the ITS nerds on campus that I'm having a hardware problem.. they salivate over these things.

And oh, Dr. Jeck the price has dropped considerably.. mainly because I'm selling it to my older brother. Keeping the machine in the fam will save me money on buying an external hard-drive in porting over my music and files. And oh, all proceeds of my sale are going towards a top of the line Macbook (black, of course.)

you probably have some corrosion on the motherboard. you have to probably buy a new one. or ... find the corrosion and clean it with a cleaner safe for that sort of thing.  even if you think you got it all, that was just the visiable stuff. there will be corrosion likly to be hiding under electrical components on the board.

good luck, hopefully it was small, or mabe just a cpu or something cheap.

warrantee's dont have any coverage for accedental damage such as liquid spills, unless you spacifically buy it, and if you send it in for serivice they will find it (ya i find it alot!) so its not worth the wasted time and money to send it in.

here is a reg file you can try.

copy paste this text into a text file and name it, FIXCD.reg or something like that.

Quote
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

;Issue this addresses: Use this when a CD-Rom drive is not working properly (being seen, showing up as a HD, etc) within WinXP.

;NOTE: you may have to reinstall burning software after this fix is applied.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ControlClass{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet003ControlClass{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-

right click the file and merge or open. you may have to restart and you may have to re-install burning software (i havent needed too, but sometimes you have too).

EDIT: when i look at the post it says "Cl ass" but it should be "Class" i dont know why (besides the forums formatting) that it would have  a space in it. so remove the space after pasting.
