Ok, in the next few months I will have the opportunity to build a rig from scratch. So, I thought it would be cool to do a rig pieced together by everyone here at ThePlatoon. The rule is it has to be under $1000. So I guess the name for this would be "The Platoon's ultimate rig for under 1k." It may exceed that by a few bucks but I will decide how much in the future. Also I would prefer to buy from one site, NewEgg.com or something else, to prevent a lot of shipping cost, and parts arriving at different times, but exceptions can be made.

The first thing we need is a list of all the stuff I will need. Some people think choose a cpu first, some MOBO, some different. What do you think I should pick first? Make a list of all the things in order. This will ensure compatibility. Also I'm leaning more toward AMD ,so that might help.

For each piece of hardware, once I get about 4-5 to choose from, I'll make a poll so everyone can vote. I'll update this thread with all the final decisions.

Do you have an operating system or will that have to be included in the purchase cost?

Well the first decision IMO would be to determine just what use this system is to be put to, plain jane desktop, media center, gaming rig, gaming server, ect.  then we can go about deciding just what sort of and how many pci(e) / sata / IDE / USB slots - ports we would need thereby giving us better direction as to a choice in motherboards

i.e. Plain desktop could get by with onboard sound, video, usb and an IDE cable whereas a mod-running monster of a gaming rig could use 2 PCIe slots or more for video, pci slot for sound, sata ports to run your OS and your apps on different drives ect.

So should I assume you're wanting to build a gaming rig?

I do have  XP, but I can upgrade to Vista if needed. I'll only save the DVD drive. My old rig will still have a cd drive, it will be kept for surfing the web and other stuff, basicaly a family pc. Gaming is what I'm shooting for. I know 1k is not much for one of those, but that's why it's a challenge and I need some help.

How about this schedule?

MOBO
CPU
GFXcrd
RAM
HDD
SOUNDcrd
PSU/CASE
OTHER

Anything to add?
sry im in a hurry.

I built my rig bout 2 an a half years ago now for 2K, and I haven't had to upgrade a single part since. The one exception was my DVD burner which caught on fire. Apparently HP took the term "DVD burner" too literally. Ended up building my friends new comp for him about a year back too, so any help you need I can probably provide.

Going to need:

Motherboard
Processor
RAM
Power Supply
Case
Video Card
Audio Card
necessary ROMs

Well, it might take 1/2 of the money needed (Havent found a price on one yet) but this mobo has my nipples exploding with delight.

Budget gamer rig that is DX10 capable system w/ Vista (native DX10) and 32 bit OS for max game compatability.  Mobo has built in wifi for added little bonus.  Can also immediately set up a RAID 0 array.

I'd expect about 2 years of life from this rig before a major upgrade would be needed.

Won't be the fastest rig on the block, but you'll be a happy gamer.

eww, i wouldnt use that grfx card. who wants vista for gaming let alone dx10 hasnt made any headway at all, and xbox is making pc games dumber.  sofar all the dx10 games released will play on windowsXP without any issues, and someones also making a dx10 wrapper for xp.

using onboard raid is like using just software raid, its not worth it, its all smoke and mirrors, an advertising thing. external cards are the only way raid is going to benifit you in any array.

Almost forgot...stay away from XP Pro x64.  It's the orphaned OS atm with very little development going on for it :/.

MO...not to try to put you down or anything but I can name you half a dozen DX10 games slated for release in the 4th Q of this year...nevermind what we'll see in Q1 and 2 of 2008.  While there are rumours of possibly running DX10 on XP, that's all it is atm...rumours.  Sure, you can run DX9 and still play them, but if you want to experience "next gen" gaming on a PC, you're gonna have to upgrade and plan on Vista being part of that process.

I had nothing but a lot of issues running my new rig on XP Pro.  I switched to Vista and the issues went away.  I have no idea were Vista got such a bad name from...I expect the launch when support was at it's lowest point.  But we saw the same thing with Win Xp and SP1 and then again with SP2.  Vista has been fine running for me with only a couple of very minor hiccups along the way.

So is it running GR, and games from that era ok as a rule or u sticking to newer titles?

I'll be jumping to Vista with my next rig.

It's inevitable anyway, and in spite of the various bad things I've heard, I trust DaSmerg's claims with it. If he says it's gaming fine, then it is. And in the coming year MS will work out any bugs.

Now I just need someone to explain the whole 64 bit thing to me.

lol, vista is such a pain. its not getting better. the hardware issues, the interface issues the whole thing with driver support issues. hey mabe one system you created works better on vista - try telling that to everyone else.

drm issues, speed issues, games are slow on vista.

sofar all the games that were released using dx10 can be played on directx9 without issues its not a rumour.  and "next gen" lol, thats such a Microsoft ad campain its so funny.  do you know the differnce between dx9 and 10?  its not going to make things "next gen" game dev's are not even making huge differnces.  so what if there are titles lined up for dx10, its not going to make them unavailable on dx9 regardless!  vista is such a poor os, its funny that anyone would use it and be satisfied.

i know they are working on it, but when sp1 comes out its a big peice of ....
they delayed it even longer too.

MS is making changes in its os to accomidate better performance from vid cards and in doing so its going to make dx10 even more possible on xp, so not only do we have dx10 games playable on xp, but we have a 3rd party software compainy making a wrapper for it, and MS themselfs are going to make it easier to do the same thing, play dx10 on winXP. rumurs? well, not really, i already know from ATI in spacific that they are working with MS on issues regarding dx10, i have tested the 3rd party software wrapper with spacific dx10 codepaths on winXP, and i have played the games that are suppose to be dx10 vista only on a windows XP machine. rumur? i belive not.

when vista is stable and customizable http://www.vlite.net/ and im able to do what many people need and want - then i will use vista, thats over 1 year away. when i buy a new computer with "next gen" parts which wont be for a while (cause next gen isnt here yet - until they make software that utilizes 4 cores and physics etc) i will likly upgrade. forget the perfromance hit and annoyance that vista gives me now - (i use vista all the time, i repair computers for a living).

http://www.ubuntu.com/ try out linux - try out the compiz fusion that is the 3d grfical interface... try playing games from linux - its pritty sweet! tho not all games will work, most can be played some way or annother and its only getting better.  im not much of an ubuntu guy, or a gamer on linux either, but its still better than vista.

EDIT: update - directx10.1 info... here is link to the sdk.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=529f03be-1339-48c4-bd5a-8506e5acf571&DisplayLang=en&displaylang=en

+Shader Model 4.1.
-dynamically selective sample pattern for MSAA
-better resource handling and TextureCube Arrays

XAudio 2 is going to replace DirectSound for 5.1 sound, since vista couldnt do surround sound well. this will also be able to make cross-platform development possible.
Along with support for multi-core processors. when a CPU with many cores some of the cores will do audio processing.

Haven't loaded up Classic GR but I'm playing Oni without any issues.

The only game I have any issues with is Arma.  But from what I've been reading...it has issues.

I'll give you a great example...couldn't play any source based game on my rig under Win Xp.  I switched to Vista Home Pro x64 and all those issues went out the window.  Same with C&C:3.  I had to the start game...ctrl-alt-del real quick...set affinity to Core 0 and then alt tab back into the game under Win Xp.  Don't have that issue under Vista.

I've had no driver or hardware issues to report thus far.

The only (annoying) issue I've had is that I'm running Office XP.  Under Vista, Outlook won't remember the p/w's to my email accounts.  So everytime I check my email, I have to re-enter the p/w's.  No biggy, more annoying than anything.

Thinking "On-the-cheap",,,

I'm sure some will cringe,

Not "cutting-edge" by any means but it will beat a spork in a knife-fight

$600-$700 range

The board is core duo ready, the PSU should just about handle all this and mabey 1 more drive.

Something cheap-ish to game on.

(Later recalled that its not an sli mobo and upgraded the Vid card)
