a $999 price tag for the whole package new... Undecided

But CS3 looks awesome... I hope I can get my hands on it soon, but I'm doubtful of that.

you can get photoshop through schools, colleges, and universitys for a discounted price most of the time.  i was part of an orginization that got products at a really reduced price from the manufactures, and that was an opertunity taken from a college class from an instructer that worked at a leading software group.

I think I still would rather do the rendering in a software made for rendering and then later composite it in Photoshop, just like I have for the past years.

Hope there are some more useful function in the new version. But then CS2 wasn't that much more then CS with a few useless additions.

I got CS2 through my school as part of my program, along with QuarkXpress and Lightwave. Since I have an older version of Max and a not-too-old yet version of Lightwave, I don't see the need for another 3D renderer, especially when I'll most likely be doing animation or creating low-poly game objects, not 3D stills.
