It is a Gateway 400VTX. The HD was a "Hitachi IC25N030ATCS04-0". It is used mainly for internet. Smiley

i have worked on many of those.  just plug in any size (gb size) 2.5" laptop hdd and its good to go, restore using your gateway os and drivers disks (blue and red disks i belive).

you can use toshiba, hitachi, segate, whatever you want.

i recomend toshiba drives, i have worked on alot of laptops and they seem to be the most common with the least amount of replacements compaired to other brands.

if your looking to repair the drive you can use the gateway tool "GWScan" it can be found on gateways support site by searching the downloads. this will tell you if it can fix the defective sectors, move the sectors to a differnt location and nulling them (reducing space of course, but lettiing you use the good parts). if the platters or the hdd arm are damaged you need to get a new drive.

i dont recomend ebay, but you can find good prices. i recomend if you do buy a drive from ebay to run gwscan and return it if you find defective sectors, make sure you work out a deal with the buyer about that, cause they may have an as-is sale, no returns.

i think most of those older laptops come with a 4200rpm speed - you can probably get faster without any issues, at least i havent seen any, but it will likly reduce power, might be noiser (depends), and might get hotter (really all depends).

good luck with that.

Ok. Thanks. The HD if done for. All it does is makes a clicking sound and won't boot. I'll look around NewEgg.

Think i'll go with THIS one.
