Just updated the ATI drivers. Still no good.

Well, at least it's not a big deal because I don't play games at 1024x768 anymore.

You know what, I don't know how open to the idea you'd be but I'd be willing to bet a whole lot of your problems will melt away by switching that ATI to a Nvidia (and doing a proper driver de-install and re-install).

They used to be pretty close but IMHO there is a widening gap opening up in favour of N atm.  As always, I'm sure the pendulum will swing back over time.

Well, I do think that blaming my issue on a particular company is in bad taste. Obviously it's not an 'ATI' problem.

However....I actually was getting ready to switch back to Nvidia, but only bacause of that latest super card they just came out with (forget which number).  Only problem is I have to buy a new rig to go along with it. My AGP only motherboard is out of date, and so is my 2.6 Ghz P4.

check this out...
http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews/Sapphire%20X1950Pro%20AGP/index.php
a review of an AGP card based on new technology. its not directx 10, but its atleast good enough to stick in your agp slot!

DH Review: Sapphire X1950 Pro 512Mb AGP

there is also a new one that i seen this morning - a 1600 and x1650 in agp flavor.

as for ati vs nvidia - i dont think thats an issue at all.

you might want to try http://www.drivercleaner.net/ im not sure if it cost anything anymore - but it didnt before - if you cant find a free version on his site - download an older version which is free elsewhere. - i havent used this application for a while because i just formatted my system.

here is ati's new offering.
http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=36642
it looks promissing! but we may  have annother delay on it! http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=36673

i dont think the top end for that chip will be agp at all, but within some months we will likly see a midrange one with agp.

You know what tho Mono...as happen-stance would have it, I find myself back using an ATI card again.  I'll tell you what, my Nvidia was a much better card and was far easier to configure and I've acutually encountered issues with games with the ATI.

I tell ya, there was once, not that long ago, very little seperating the two cards.  Now, I'm seeing N open up a gap.  As has happened previously though, I'm pretty sure the pendulum will swing back the other way.

1024 x 768 isn't a widescreen setting, obviously. Does this occur with other non-widescreen resolutions or just 1024 x 768?

Other 'non widescreen' settings (ie: 1280x1024) work fine.

Gah, that's so weird. I was thinking maybe it wasn't resizing all non-widescreen settings but so much for that.
