I'm getting ready to buy this CPU...

Seems like a great CPU at a great price.

Anyone see any reason not too, or know of a better deal substitute?

nope... quality for a good price.

89% of the reviews are a 5 egg, pretty good in my book.

By the way, this is the exact same CPU as what's in this Alienware.

Hey I'll admit it straight off the bat, I'm a sucker for AMD.  Love 'em.

But the sad fact of reality is that Intel has a commanding lead in processors.  Simple dig through a few benchmarks and you can see for yourself.

I don't know what your budget is Mono or if you have any kind of brand loyalty.  But I'd reccomend going with what I bought, and it'll cost you a mere $53 bucks more, the Intel core 2 e6600 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115003

yes, its true i love amd too. i follow the news everyday about both. i belive that amd is becoming more and more like intel and both compaines have there dry streeks, right now its amd's turn to be dry, they are having a ruff time with things, but obtaining ati right now will make the future much better.

i suggest the intel chip unless you have an am2 socket motherboard already. am2 never really took off yet. and not to mention amd is going to make more sockets soon. i hear am2+ am3 and then the new phenom processor will have its new socket (3 sockets for that one).

good things are going to come for amd in the laptop world! i promis that - but reality may change that outcome well see. have you seen the xbox360 chip - it has two dies on it, thats what the new amd/ati chip will be. it will have a dual or quad core with annother small core seperate from those cores, this controls the grfx.

the tradeoff will be better faster grfx with better power consumption, and likly better cooling.  this will likly go into some desktops but i doubt it at first.

amd's prices are dropping all the time they just did a price drop recently - so thats one great thing, they still have budget processors.  amd's quad core technology has been in development for a larger timeframe than intels, but they are really going to have to do something else to compeat againt the intels current architechure which is great right now (intel as a compainy still is in my opinion a crack house - but then again none of amd's current decessions are that smart either).

good luck with choosing the right stuff, it can be hard when no one knows the future of either compainy...  i know amd's current socket wont have a huge lifespan so i would choose against it, but im not sure about intels socket future tho.

Don't have the MOBO yet, so I'm open. I was actually going to go with an intel Nvidia Mobo before I saw the AMD. I don't care which I get, as long as it kicks ass. I want to buy a mobo that will support a quad core for later, but put a dual core on it for now. I don't care if i go Nvidia or ATI, but i was thinking of going Nvidia this time around, just for a change.

How about this...dunno what your budget is Mono but for $2019.91 (USD) before shipping (and some assembly required)...

Quad core processor, latest Intel based motherboard, 2 gigs of memory, the 2nd best video card currently available on the market, Ageia Physics card, 850w power supply (ample power for now and the future) (power supply is a combo deal available with Vid card), DVD-CD writer/reader and a beautiful black case that has ample room to install everything (I have the same one and there's lots of room for big meat hooks to be plugging parts in) plus room for the future (like adding another vid card for SLI) and top it off with a total of a terabyte of HD storage (2 - 500gig SATA 2 drives).

Thanks Smerg. I'm on the run right now but I'll be looking at the links shortly.

Budget looks about right, except I'll want the best vid card, not the second best.  Tongue

One word of warning.  Don't go with the Quad Core CPUs.  They're being dumped by Intel because they are problematic (don't know the exact problem).  But there's something else in the works that will replace these soon.

Our CPU guy at work (he tests all this stuff to see how best to build the rigs we send out with our software) says "don't touch 'em".  That's good enough for me. Keith knows what he's talking about.  Tom Halfhill and Gordon Ma Ung don't seem to like them, either (two more reasons to stay away from them, IMHO).

well intel decided to not make a true quad core. they just took two dual cores and glued them together and called it quad.  amd made a true quad core cpu its better to go with amd in that respect but we have yet to see them (they release in august i belive - probably late aug), but then again intel is also releasesing something else too.
