I'm confused.

I'm shopping around for a widescreen monitor, but I want to make sure it supports 1080i (Yeah, the Xbox360)

Right now I have this...

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8043253&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat104900050022&id=1158104010371

But I don't think it supports 1080i. I know I've seen consoles hooked up to some TVs in  the stores, and the picture looks amazing. Mine doesn't look as good, I just don't think I've got true high def going on.

So I'm looking around trying to figure out which monitors are 1080i.

Very few actually say it. Many say 'HD' but they say 720p.

What's the difference between the p and the i?  (720p vs 720i).

Also, should I assume the monitor only supports 1080i if it specifically says it?

I'm confused.   :hmm:

From what I'm reading...to get 1080i, you have to have a resolution of at least 1920x1080, correct?

My monitor is 1680x1050.

Also, the p is better than the i, but p's aren't all that common yet and are expensive.

p = progressive scan and i = interlaced

To expand on what BJB is saying:

I= interlaced, which means that when an image is drawn on the screen, it is drawn in 2 passes, one for the odd horizontal lines and one for the even horizontals.

P= progressive, which means that each image drawn on the screen is done in one pass.

An interlaced video setting means at best you'll get 30 frames per second, even if the screen is capable of displaying 60 frames per second. The reason for this is that each image is drawn essentially twice- once for odd then once for even. The image is drawn at 60 frames per second, but only half of it is drawn per frame, therefore reducing the actual FPS to 30. Progressive draws a true 60 frames per second. If the video feed is only at 30FPS, then it draws each frame twice, still showing 60FPS.

720P, or 720 horizontal lines drawn progressively, though a slightly lower resolution, will look better than 1080I simply because you'll have less image "shimmer". If you're not worried about speed (ie fps, such as strategy games) then 1080I will work fine. If you're looking for max FPS (ie shooters, racing, heavy action) then you'll want to run your games at 720P anyway over 1080I. It's resolution vs. clarity, or detail vs. speed. If you can get a monitor that runs both 1080I and 720P (which most will do both if they support 1080I) then you're set.

I suggest asking someone where you are buying it at. And making sure they know what they are talking about, not some kid that wondered in off the street so they decided to give him a job because he wouldn't leave. You can always return something that does not support 1080i. Oh, and go buy it at a store, don't do it online, it will be easier to find what you want, but harder to ask questions about it and return if something is wrong.
