Anyone know what happens when you run a game on a wide aspect monitor, like a 16:9?

GRAW has an aspect setting for these monitors that are becoming more and more the standard.

But what about older games that don't have an aspect setting? Does the image still show relatively square (1040 x 768 for example) with just black edges on the screen where it doesn't fill the entire width out? Or does it screw up the image by stretching it's width to fill the screen?

So does that mean that older games don't look good on a wide aspect monitor? I need to know before I end up buying one.
