GameSpot has posted a Rainbow Six: Lockdown preview, going hands-on with the PC version and saying "Forget about last year's console versions; Rainbow Six: Lockdown for the PC appears to be a completely different game, indeed".

Quote
Still, we should note that the PC version of Lockdown isn't quite Rainbow Six as you may know it. First, the trademark mission planning that the series is known for is gone. Now, after you outfit your team from the extensive array of weapons and equipment options (at least that remains untouched), you launch directly into the mission. You no longer have the ability to plan out your team's attack, and while most players generally skipped this phase, it was one of the things that made Rainbow Six different from virtually every other shooter on the market. Also, the multiple-squad format of previous Rainbow Six games is gone. Instead of leading several teams into combat and being able to jump between them, you'll lead a single team of four elite operatives who follow you around and follow your orders.

I actually don't see a problem. They're right (with me anyways) with the planning stage. On the very rare occasoion that I actually played the single player I never used the planning stage.

As far as the multiple squads are concerned, I'm on the fence. I wasn't a fan of being able to switch who you were. That's actually the most unrealistic thing I've ever seen in any FPS. But it would be nice to command other squads.

However, I don't really care much myself. If the game has a solid coop feature, I'm happy. I prefer real people being on my team then commanding AI. But for those who were ver y much into the planning stage, this is sad news indeed.

I do know some people liked to set all the operatives on auto, plan their attack and just watch the entire mission happen. It's like creating your own little movie.

Too bad. The mission planning was the reason why I played the Rainbow Six games. Now it's just another shooter. Why bother? Oh well.

i cant find where i can edit the reply, but i didnt really use the planning stage at all. I found it annoying. Also it's good to know i wont have to deal with it when making a map.

i love sp. and i love planning.  i will miss it but im sure it wont make a huge dif.

once your oponent dies your dead and have to start over, so no need for planning.

We should also note that Lockdown isn't a "one shot, one kill" game like previous Rainbow Six games, either. In early Rainbow Six games, you have the barest margin for error, since a single shot can put a commando out of commission. However, Lockdown is a lot more forgiving, since each commando has a health bar consisting of three bars. If you're wounded, you take damage. If you take enough damage, you lose a health bar. If you lose all three health bars, the commando is dead. And since you can't switch between commandos, if your main character dies, you've got to reload the mission.

i don't mind if ubisoft/redstorm make games which are different than the roots of rainbow six but i DO mind when they keep using the name while this game is a totally freaking DIFFERENT one. I feel like i'm being raped right now. ****ing bullshit. Don't use the Rainbow Six name for a game that's totally different!

hmm i'm not allowed to edit my own posts but i just wanted to add that i hope that there will be a server sided option for the health system so you can turn it on "one shot one kill" or "health bar" option.

Fix, please explain to me how the uzbekistanian boy scout AIs are more realistic than the switching between teams considering the fact that one guy (you, the player) coordinated the mission.

Zoogie, you can edit your posts by clicking the icon on the right of the "quote" button.
And you're right, as long as they don't use the "Rainbow Six" title, they can do whatever monkey see, monkey do.
But it's auw th3 bih, so f*ck 'em let 'em fry.

Is this a serious question?

Regardless of how intelligent your operatives are, you as a person IRL can't switch bodies. Therefore, it would be more realistic that you can't switch bodies in the game. If this were RL and you coordinated the assault, and half way in the building you're trying to secure one of your operative can't remember how to open a door, you're not able to switch to his POV and do it for him.

I'm not saying the AI couldn't use an overhaul, but switching bodies mid-battle doesn't seem very realistic to me.

the ai in this game looks bad. i cant see how ubi/redstorm always say,... "improved AI" when it still sucks.  ohh they might take more cover or something like that... but the AI really isnt good and they make little effort in making any huge complexity to it.  its just a ruse.

it's a shame, and you see this in alot of games Sad Most developers are concentrating on advanced next-gen graphics and are forgetting the AI. AI is one of the most important factor's of a videogame and still not much improvement has been made in the last 5 years.

I think this is because there has been a switch in the gaming industry. Old games were more about great gameplay and not "so much" about graphics. Nowadays it's just pumping new games out that are as beautiful as possible. It's like a race and they're forgetting other things. Altough i think the general consumer actually isn't very interested in most things except the graphics.
Unfortunately i also have got this "graphic disease" (altough i can't run games on very high graphs). I still remember that years ago i could play ANY game that had good gameplay regardless of the graphics. Nowadays i'm pretty soon turned off by a game if the graphics are outdated. I don't have this with a game like Ghost Recon but i do have it with most other games.... You just get spoiled, if you want it or not.
