Sort of.

Based on the earlier versions of Gothic (and what Demon told me about Gothic 3), it's dated as far as graphics are concerned as opposed to Oblivion. Gothic 2 compared to TESIII, Gothic didn't have as many choices, in a sense. You can't specialize in one area (like magic, melee, etc) and then later on decide to "brush up" on the other combat areas. Since the character system is based on skill points, you don't have as much freedom strictly due to the amount of points you're able to accumulate.

There aren't really multiple guilds for you to join or anything like that, most everything feeds off the main story. You have to join a guild, like the mages for instance, to progress through the main story. However, the main story is much longer, much more in depth and to be honest, it's much more interesting. TES is about the dynamics, Gothic is about the story.

That, however, doesn't mean Gothic doesn't have gameplay or choice, because I actually prefer Gothic over the TES series. Suffice it to say, if you're an RPG fan, Gothic will not disappoint.

Okay, after downloading and installing the demo I can safely say;

Wow, what a terrible turn for the worse this series has made. I'm not sure what happened, but I was expecting the gameplay, the interface, the graphics and everything else to be the same as Gothic and Gothic 2. No change.

It appears that it has all changed. The interface is horrendous, the gameplay is pitiful and the graphics aren't even as good as Deus Ex. I'm not sure what the boys over at Piranha Bytes are smoking, but you're not supposed to take steps BACKWARDS when making games.

When I was watching the opening cutscene I said to myself, "This looks like total shit, but I'm positive it's just the movie". Then I get into the game and everything looks absolutely terrible. It reminded me of a 2D cartoon style game. Graphics don't mean everything, but the gameplay was nothing to write home about either.

I said in my last post that Gothic is all about the story, and I sure hope Gothic 3's story is fantastic, because it has little else going for it. I'll probably never find out though, the game is just too horrible.

I'm quite disappointed.

Do yourself a favour, buy the Gothic 2 Gold Edition (Gothic 2 plus the expansion). This way you'll see what the series used to be like. It was once good.

It's like Deus Ex 2 all over again. Taking a great game and dragging it through the mud.

Honestly, I checked out the screenshots after my last post, and thought "Uck...looks like a cheesy version of TES".

I downloaded it anyway ("don't judge a book by it's cover") but haven't installed yet.

I guess I won't bother. I'm too busy with GOW and SC: DA anyway.

If you're already into Oblivion, I wouldn't waste your time with this game. Hell, I know I won't. I just started playing Oblivion again a few days ago and I'm loving it.

I did find that Gothic 2 was more interesting story wise than the TES games were, though. The controls were a bit more clumsy, the graphics weren't as good and you didn't have as many options, but it was a fantastic game. All of those things were a lot better then they are in Gothic 3, thankfully.

If you can find it at your local game store in the bargain bin or used, I suggest picking it up if you'd like a solid story driven game. But my suggestion to anyone is to pass on Gothic 3, or at least try the demo and see for yourself how unworthy the game actually is.

I didn't think it was out right horrible. But perhaps I was just willing to give it some lee way since Oblivion is next to perfect IMO.

One of the reasons I was being forgiving, was in some of the eraly interviews they were talking about Co-op I think. However it's not in the final version, so it dosen't have anything extra on oblivion.

I might just check it out for a bit, I'd like to see if the writing team, is still doing it's job right, because thats always been gothics forte, a engaging story and quests.
