I'm looking for a good turn-based strategy/rpg. Something like the old Shining Force games for the Sega Genesis (Final Fantasy Tactics, Crystal Warriors, and Heroes of Might & Magic are other similar games).

Any suggestions?

I just bought Heroes of Might and Magic 5.

Not bad. Still deciding though. I think it might be a little simplistic for you.

The Total War series is turn based, and an exceptional series. Plus you get the option of the real time battles, or you can just computer resolve them and stick with the turn based world map. Medieval 2 is coming in a couple of months. It's going to be a must have.

Commandos 3 is turn based.

It gets a lot better as you progress. You don't have many units or options in the first few missions, but once you start getting your own cities, larger armies, extra heroes, and special abilities it gets really cool.

I've played the Total War games, but I haven't played Commandos 3. I'll give it a look. Cheesy

Thanks,
~Mike

Not sure where the Civilization series would fit in. Probably just a turn-based strategy game, but I've played III and IV and I love them. Great for a "play at your own pace" game that you can take an extended period of time to plan each move.

Yeah, the Civilization games are great, but they don't have the tactical battle system I'm looking for.

I'd be interested in something turn-based and RPG style as well. The old FF7 game comes to mind, but I've also played the Phantasy Star games, Shining Force series, and a few others. I'd prefer to avoid emulators. Chrono Trigger was another good one. There must be something like these out there- something in-depth and captivating, with a long stroll to uber-powerness.

Me likes pretty things that go boom.

i read about a game called something like Galatica Civilizations or something like that. Review was very good and got me interested right away. But i didn't got my hands on it, yet...

Game is a bit like Civilization only with many extra's. It's possible to win without ever fighting etc. Dunno if it's the game you're looking for but you can always read a review bout it Smiley

again quite an old title, but have you tried "UFO: enemy unknown", or any of the follow ups.....

The later titles allowed the player to switch between turn based and real time strategy play.
