Stating that "The market was too narrow for it to be a viable business choice," Ubisoft has backed out of the tactical shooter genre, effectively ending the Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon series of games.

With the Clancy cadre now officially in-house, Guillemot announced intentions to create a massively multiplayer online (MMO) game based on the license. Gamasutra reports that Ubisoft had previously considered such a project, but that the high development costs -- on top of royalty fees -- gave the publisher pause on the matter. "Having no royalties, it's going to help us to have a full return, so we are ready and decide now to go for an MMO on the Clancy name," said Guillemot, further noting the various properties currently tied to the license. "This will make that product [a] really big product."

"We have the technology to create MMOs, and we have lots of our games that are on the Clancy franchise that are already multiplayer," continued Guillemot. "So to create an MMO, we need to have larger teams to actually spend the time and to create it. So it's more a question of decisions and teams, and now, because we have the knowhow so we can go for it now."

Wow. Just, wow.

I would be leary about it, I thought vegas was a good game but also saw a ton of glitches. I liked americas army and love rainbow six/ghost recon. I just hope EA actually builds a game and not a money machine.
