From slashdot:

"The New York Times is reporting that World of Warcraft maker Blizzard plans to make a big-screen adaptation of its very popular gameworld. From the article: "Many details of the film deal remained unsettled or undisclosed on Monday, including the choice of director, cast, the planned release date and the exact budget (rarely a firm number in the movie business anyway). But Blizzard and Legendary appeared united in wanting the project to be a major departure from Hollywood's undistinguished record in turning games into films. 'We try to make big, epic, immersive games at Blizzard, and we have a track record of making some of the best games in the world,'" Paul Sams, Blizzard's chief operating officer, said in an interview. 'Similarly, our goal is to make one of the best films in the world. With Legendary, they have a creative and management team that is so attuned with us it was like we were separated at birth. We want to make a movie that will not only appeal to our existing fans, but will also bring in people that have never heard of Warcraft before.'"

Considering the quality of their cutscenes and art department, this should be pretty easy. Plus now with all this WoW money, they don't have to cater to a movie house, I expect them to be fully in charge, so if it's good or bad it'll be all blizzards doing.

If they were smart, they'd take a lesson from square enix, and do it like advent children and not spirited away. Blizzard does great work, but cut scenes are ridiculous not serious. Unless that writing team hunkers down, even a rabid fan like me is not sure they can pull off a movie script. I'd like to be proven totally wrong, I think especially the diablo 2 and warcraft 3 movies were getting up there, but more with things like, starwars, riddick, Independace day, terminator. Ridiculosity and eye candilations, a light story to string together combat scenes, and intensly visual set ups (dark rooms, things like hair on a head, a coat, or a bear).

Something like alien 1 or blade runner is more script based, acting based. With the art teams work as the beliveable back drop of a fantasy world.

The other question that will need answering ASAP, is when is the time period, a past one or a totally new one, will the movie effect the warcraft universe for games.

I don't think Blizzard would have any problems with writing. The writers as is have to just write all the dialogue for the actual games story/plot. Sort of like WarCraft III. Amazing cut scenes, good story when actually playing. They just have to convert everthing that happens in game into full-length animation form.

I see no problems.
