The movies would be as follows:

The Hunt for Red October
Patriot Games
Clear and Present Danger
The Sum of All Fears

One of the things that messed me up is that I read them in the order they were published (more or less), which is definately not in chronological order.

The order in Seb's link is the way to go. Some carry on from one book to another, others have some time in between. Don't miss out on Without Remorse even though it's not really about Jack Ryan, it's his best book IMHO.

with out remorse is definitely the best but the bear and the dragon was damn good aswell, and rainbow six.......... you get it

no not alll the books have the same characters or even follow along with the other books, I remember a clancy book that I read that was completely independent of the rest of the books.it was about the cold war coming to a war between us and the soviets, it was an excellent book but I cant remember the name.

Red Storm Rising is probably the one you're thinking of. Just to clarify, there are common characters and story threads through the "Jack Ryan" books, but Clancy has written (co-written, put his name on without writting, etc) many other non-Ryan books.
