Although I'd probably like it, they need to just let it die.
Star Trek had a good run, but it's pretty clear that people are either getting sick of it, or the new(er) producers/directors are taking the series into a direction most people don't like.
Enterprise crashed and burned after 4 seasons, enduring the same fate the orginal series did when they only managed to complete 3 of the 5 seasons they intended to. Then there was Nemesis, although good IMO, was less then successful.
After the what, 40 or so years the series has been around they have run out of ideas (or ran out long ago, rather) and can only re-hash ideas that have been used time and time again. Many episodes you watch of any series you can compare to a near identical episode from all previous series, save for the original series of course..
They need to move on.

Ahhhh okay, I read about this before, but it was only that they were making a movie, but it didn't say jack about what it was going to be about.
While I agree with fixxxer, I also would like to see star trek find it's grace again. However it would mean a really fresh take, IE a klingon or another race.
More importantly though, for them to come out with a new series, it would have to compete with battlestar galatica, something I only think they could do if they brought back gene roddenberry from the dead. A good movie tough would be welcomed, however a bad movie, or even a very mediocre movie, could sink star trek into the pages of history.
I hope things like the star trek MMO, will be better venues.

I wouldn't mind seeing something like you mentioned, Demon, about them focusing on a different race/empire should they decide to make a new series.
The only problem is, although everything was very detailed about each race, could you really watch 7 seasons of a bunch of Klingon's screaming and fighting? Or 7 seasons of humourless Vulcan's quoting logic? I'd rip my hair out in both instances. Perhaps a Romulan centric series would work, it's about the only spin off idea I could see working.
So far, only series to be drastically different then all others was Voyager. Sadly, it didn't do very well either. I personaly loved it, but that wasn't the case with the majority of fans. So Voyager's lack of success may push the producers away from trying anything too different.
And you're right, they'd have to compete with Battlestar Galactica. Which is, IMO, a much better series. Trek was good, but I can only take so much "positive" fiction. Based on the way day to day life is on earth in the year 2006, I don't think we'll eliminate poverty or have everyone living harmoniously in the future. It'll probably just get worse, so fictional shows that at least try to be as realistic as possible always hold more interest for me.

I personally loved DS9, despite the fact that it often revolved around the same races and characters, and certainly the all-too-familiar locale. But when you look back at what made TNG such a huge success, it was all about the characters. The locations and specific "quests" didn't really matter, so long as the personalities of the crew were allowed to shine through. I have the feeling this was the draw for Voyager as well, but without something to relate to, I believe that the show was doomed from the start. TNG had one of the strongest casts of any drama- sci-fi or not. DS9 kept most of the casual fans and definitely all of the trekkies by re-casting Michael Dorn and Colm Meaney, giving the fanbase some personalities they were instantly familiar with.
Admittedly, I never watched Voyager on a regular basis due to the conflicting timeslot. I also never watched Enterprise due to the lack of UPN where I used to live. Perhaps some day I'll rent the season DVD's or something.
I have always loved the movies, however, that have given us a glimpse into the Trek universe. Being a technophile, regardless of how impossible the science, it has always fascinated me- not so much in what they used, but how they used it. Moral judgement in thse shows was also top-notch, with plenty of internal conflict and mystery. I'll always be a Trekkie because of that. I've seen bad episodes, but even those cannot convince me that the universe we were exposed to wasn't worth the trip.

Look forward to it. Here's hoping they launch a new tv series along with it to get back on track.
Enterprise was interesting but tried to retell a story that many felt they knew already...and it failed pretty miserably when compared to the other series bearing the name Star Trek. Enterprise had it's moments but it definately didn't have the feel of what I have come to know as "Star Trek" and IMHO that was prolly why it went kerplunk 4 seasons in.

Personally though, Im gonna stick with Stargate: SG1 and Stargate: Atlantis Another great couple of sci-fi shows. I just started getting into these and they're damn good. I was sadly limited to Star Trek for awhile because every time I tried to sample a new bit of sci-fi I was always horribly let down. Mainly when I tried to watch Andromeda and Farscape. Possbibly two of the worst shows ever to be created. But alas, I tried out SG1 and Atlantis and found two more good sci-fi shows.

Presumably, younger actors will be cast in the roles.
Sure, but... Leonard Nimoy is mr. Spock and mr. Spock is Leonard Nimoy. William Shatner is Captain Kirk and Captain Kirk is Willian Shatner. Could you imagine Ben Affleck and Leonardo Dicaprio as Spock and Kirk?

And they dont spend hours trying to configure something to emit a tachyon beam cross phased with a graviton pulse... they either just go away or blow it up!

I personally liked Enterprise. The first season was good, and the fourth season was good. They kinda dropped off in the second and third and i think they lost a lot of their fan base. I liked how they touched on the borg going in the past and crashing on Earth. When they really started to pick up was their fourth season. They started explaining things. They even got into why on the Original Series, Klingons look one way and on the movies and on, they look another. They kinda touched on that subject in a Next Gen ep, but Worf passed it off as part of klingon history he didn't want to talk about. In that last season they started to explain a lot of the history that was kinda just assumed. I enjoyed it and would love another studio to pick it up. I will say, part of Enterprise's demise was the crappy TV channel they put it on. I know of many that could not watch it cause it just wasn't aired where they were.

And they dont spend hours trying to configure something to emit a tachyon beam cross phased with a graviton pulse... they either just go away or blow it up! This has got to be one of the worst reasons to watch anything generically dubbed "entertainment". Half of the world's problems can be lumped into these 2 reaction categories.
