So I went to see Mission Impossible 3 last night, because I was in the mood for watching stuff get blown up after a week of uberstudying for AP tests.  Overall, I thought it was okay, but not great.

The good
Good special effects.
A decent plot twist at the end.
Philip Seymore Hoffman (aka the guy from Capote) makes one badass bad guy.
Generally intense feeling.

The bad
Tom Cruise is in a leading role.  He doesn't need any more money.  Neither does scientology.
Whoever wrote the script decided to shake things up by making it an action film/chick flick hybrid.  It REALLY doesn't work.
Cheezy ending.
Pretty predictable outcome (except for the aforementioned plot twist, which doesn't add much).

My score:Star Star :1/2: (I feel generous today)

"Good special effects."

Shouldn't this be expected by todays standards?

I am so sick of hearing about or seeing special effects that seem to be the full focus of a film anymore. Character development, plot, storyline, ACTUAL ACTING! all seem to play second fiddle to "ooh! did you see that car just jump across that 60-foot gap? and that explosion?! it looked so REAL!"

I'd love to work in special effects doing CG stuff for films, as long as I wasn't working with testosterone-driven "movies for guys who like movies" action crap. I'd prefer to do some sci-fi, like SW.

Yes.  I was pulling for straws for good things to say.

They're not special effects if they aren't used in moderation.

Generally speaking, the big budget action flick and a more involved script are seemingly mutually exclusive items.

MI:3 is the first big budget popcorn muncher to role out for the summer season.  I don't expect much more from it than to be wowed and entertained while not getting so over the top that it begins to insult my low brow intelligence...if you know what I mean.

I understand exactly what you're saying though Lazer and if you notice it's usually the flicks that don't follow the usual big picture formula for reaping big bucks that make the most noise.
