Nothing to do with the movie but my introduction to the Silver Surfer was from the album cover for Joe Satriani's "Surfing With The Alien".  Great album/CD.  I'd never heard of Silver Surfer before then.  That was 1987, I think.

Satriani was/is awesome.

Flying in a Big Blue Dream was my favorite album of his.

Ironically, I think my most favorite song of his has no bad ass guitar in it at all...it's the mellow "I believe" from Flying in a Blue Dream.

That's a pretty good song but I prefer his instrumentals.  They used to use his song "Summer Song" from "The Extremist" on a commercial here in Atlanta for the only remaining rock station, 96 Rock (WKLS).  They had a fat guy doing the old "funk" style dancing as well as popping and locking.  Even doing the "hopper" where he jumps a couple of inches off the ground but does it really quickly so he looks like he's vibrating around on the ground.  I really got a kick out of that commercial.  I wish I could find it but have had no luck.  Probably because it's Satriani's song in the background (copyright and usage issues, I guess).

They used "Flying in a Blue Dream" for the 1994 (I think it was '94) Winter Olympics on TV.  I thought that was pretty cool.  And it fit the video they were showing (mostly speed skating, IIRC).

nope, over 20 years ago stand lee and jack kirby made the silver surfer. So the reference is probably the other way around.

Mono, oh I wasn't comparing FF to sin city. Though while sin city was defenetly stacked cast wise, BOTH are very big stories, the FF have lost some popularity over the years (especially when x-men exploded in the 90's everything else marvel shrunk a little), but they are marvel royalty, and comic history. Sin city is a self contained story, thats new, the FF have touched most parts of the marvel universe.

My comment was directed at Mindless. Perhaps too directly, but his statement was false, into the blue I'm sure was made for less money then either of these other movies, but it has jessica and scott cann shirtless largely bottomless, along with other hotties I'm sure, but dose it even matter, did it break cost, did anyone care about the dvd release, is there a sequel.

Thats my point, you can have half naked people all you want, a good movie makes more money, and more people will see it, more the once. Porn makes a decent amount of money with no clothes, but it's only profitable because they are generally cheap to make, and people might watch into the blue once, and WANT to see jessica alba naked having sex, but they can't, so they'll go rent some porn, and pretend she in it.

As a comic book afficianado of days past, I honestly expect more of comic movies than what we get a lot of the time. There's some really great and original stories hidden in there. Daredevil (the comic) was one of my favorites, as was Hellblazer (Constantine), Batman, JLA and a lot of ones folks probably haven't heard of.

Just because it's a comic doesn't give them free reign to make it crap. Given, reality is going to have to be checked at the door but there's still a degree of realism that I expect.

My personal problem with the original FF movie was that it was just LAME. There were no great battles, character development was half-assed, the Thing looked awful and their origin story was just a mess.

Compare that to Batman Begins where there is a good background and motivation, great action and a great villian who isn't hokey, and some well-shot scenes.

... it's definitely doable to create a good comic movie. I think the 300 will be one of them this year.

Huh?  That album cover was the first time I'd ever heard of the Silver Surfer.  It had nothing to do with when the character was created.  I don't follow comics at all.  I haven't looked at one since the 60s.

I have to agree with Aramis, that if started over from scratch, there's no reason that FF could not have been made in a totally different way.

I have a preference for movies done like Batman Begins, with a serious edge, even if the character and premise is quite 'unrealistic'. So in that regard, I suppose FF certainly could have been done better, ala Tim Burton or Tarantino.

Yep, I've had arguments with people who actually agreed with me before.  We just stated the same thing so differently that neither of us realized it at first.

It appeared to me that he thought that I was saying that that album cover was the first _appearance_ of the Silver Surfer.  But that wasn't the case.  And I was pointing out that that wasn't what I meant. :yup: I'm sure he's absolutely correct about the origins of the "Silver Surfer".  I defer to his knowledge since I don't know much about comics except that I liked Superman, Batman and the Fantastic Four when I was a kid (the Thing was my favorite).

As far as I'm concerned that was the end of it.  He didn't respond to my second post.  He didn't need to.  Simple misunderstandings are easily remedied by rational people without starting a fight.  Sith's not the first person to get the wrong end of the stick.  And I'm sure he won't be the last.  I've certainly misunderstood enough posts in my day. :tongue:

I wonder if Joe Satriani is a fan of the comic or if it just fit with the "Surfing With The Alien" title.   The comic might even have inspired the name of the song/CD.  My surmise is that's likely.

off topic a bit... i just saw EDIT SPIDERman2 and i thought this was better than the first fantastic4 movie - BUT it was still really bad in my eyes.

i did love batman begins... it had all the elements of a great movie - tho not everything was perfect, i didnt llike the lady actrise - she didnt know how to act or just something about her that was just junk.  not everything is perfect i know.

Actually, I liked Spiderman 2. Doc Ock was done pretty well overall even if they completely changed his origin, Spider-Man is more than just a one-dimensional hero with inner conflicts and wrong choices, Sam Raimi did a great job in the director's chair once again and the action and effects are near top-notch.

Oh, and Into the Blue isn't that bad of a movie. We rented it thinking it was going to suck and it's not all bad. Course, there's nice eye candy.
