Yeah, I left the theater with pretty much the same feeling.
Not a horrible movie I guess, but with the great viral marketing campaign -- and the fact that J.J. Abrams (LOST) was heading the film -- I was ready for something really mind blowing. Instead, bad acting, tons of plot holes and "wtf, are you serious?" moments, and a predictable story. The overt use of 9/11 imagery was a bit cheap (and lazy) IMHO. Some of the scenes are almost 1-to-1 copies of video from the 9/11 attacks.

Good special effects though. And the teaser trailer for the new Star Trek movie has me excited.

Sweet:
Character Hud was enjoyable
Coverfield monster kicked ass, and its little mini spiders create a ton of havoc.

WTF:
Injuries are dramatically underplayed in the movie
Conveniently placed hospital
Main plot characters sole survivors of ending accident.

Meh:
Camera angle, while cool, can make some people sick (such as my friend)

Despite all of the odd shit that holes in the plot and such, I would give it a 7.5/10

I didn't think it was a bad movie, by today's standards. By that I mean that the trailer/commercialization didn't give up most of the best plot pieces, and the movie actually offered more depth than you could get from such.

I felt that the movie was short, and overall could have been much more in-depth. It felt more like a prologue than an actual feature film. The characters were weak and could have been played by just about any Holly-wood-wannabe. The script felt too forced, pushing the limits of expectation of situation to be far too typical.

However, considering the camera angles and field motion, what they did with the monster and how they played out the choreography were borderline genius. The creature itself was seen far too infrequent, and could have really made the movie more interesting. It was my understanding that the [creators] were trying to make an icon in the monster/horror film genre to rival Godzilla. They could have, if they had tried harder. The spawnlings and the overall impact of the creature were there- it just lacked any backstory, backbone, or comeback power.

I'd recommend Cloverfield- as a rental.

Yeah, definitely waiting till like it comes on HBO or something for this one. I didn't like the trailer itself, I thought it looked pretty corny.

Indiana Jones is what I'm waiting on right now. I don't know if there are any other movies coming out are there?

You see, I think i contrast alot with this point of view. Its not supposed to be your standard feature film, its set out to be a leaked classified file, taken from the perspective of someone who cant put the camera down. its becoming increasingly common in the news that people record stuff and send it in to the news agencies. Akin to blair witch in that respect.

I dont think that any major names in hollywood could have played the characters because the audience wouldnt have believed that [insert big hollywood name] would be in that situation.

I thought you saw the monster too much, and the more the film went on the more i was disappointed with the actual monster itself! My own imagination creates much more horrible creatures than anything hollywood can provide. Although i liked the little dandruff monsters, i feel more "clicking" and less action would induce more paranoia and be a greater ride than the story as it is.

And more to the point i liked how no one had any idea WTF was going on. the confusion and panic would have been ended half way through the movie with "the boss" telling "the hero" that you have to kill it by [insert typical hollywood ending here].

DVD would only improve the feel of it!

There will be sequels, or prequels, or meanwhile-quels.

Didn't read the thread since I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm looking forward to renting this soon. This is another one that'll just be a fun popcorn movie for me. I'm not looking for an in-depth story.

A lot of folks are saying that there's no point in this one coming out on Blu-Ray, but I gotta disagree. I saw an HD trailer of this, and while there's a lot of grain and fast motion, it definitely was helped by the sharper definition of the picture. HD camcorders are becoming more common these days so there's no reason this couldn't be in HD.

/start vent

A little late to the party but...wife nabbed this steaming pile they call a movie last night off of PPV last night.  Yes, I am about to tell you how I really feel...

In a few words, this has been sooooo done before and those ones didn't suck as hard as this one.  I found very early on that the only motivation for me to keep watching it .

As the ending credits rolled by, I just kept thinking to myself wow, holy over hype and how these people keep getting budgets to make these movies?  This one gets the big, BIG  Thumbs down IMHO.

I really liked this movie. Not sure what people are having a fit over. It's one of the few films to successfully stay within the confines of the handheld camera footage (besides Blair Witch). Most of them cheat and break out of it for at least part of the movie (see Diary of the Dead).

I felt the monster was interesting and I liked how they kept the tension up. Sure, it's been done before- in the making of they were talking about how the wanted a monster movie as enduring as Godzilla for the U.S. Not like many other successful movies haven't riffed off of previous ideas. Look how many times Seven Samurai has been re-imagined.

Also, Blu-ray really does improve the look and feel of this movie. There are HD handi-cams out (which the main characters were supposedly using anyway) and it helps clean up detail and still retain the grittiness this movie needs. Personally, I loved this movie. I think people bash it because they got caught up in the hype.

The only real complaint I have is with the terrible lines streaming from the camera-guy.  Certain moments were uncomfortable, in that department.

Special effects were good, though, as were some of the tense moments.

Definitely o.k. to rent, or watch at home.
